Music and the Mind
Renée Fleming, as Artistic Advisor to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, spearheaded a collaboration with the U. S. National Institute of Health, with the participation by the National Endowment for the Arts. The focus was on scientific connection between music, health, and the brain.
The presentation at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in 2022 was titled "Our Body as an Orchestra" and focused on the powerful connections between the arts and health. The PBRC panelists explored how different parts of the body communicate with the brain; and how music can influence healthy behaviors and keep an athlete in a zone while exercising. Ms. Fleming's presentation focused on the scientific connection music has to our health and the brain. Ms. Fleming, a multiple GRAMMY™ award-winning singer, appeared in recital the following night with Inon Barnatan at the Baton Rouge River Center Theatre for Performing Arts.
